Called simply ‚”the hand weeder,” this tool comes in right- and left-hand versions. It’s got a forged steel blade, welded to a long steel shaft. A wooden handle fits over the shaft. The handle not only fits the hand well, it becomes more comfortable and attractive with age, absorbing oil from the skin, and elements from soil. It’s got lots of uses including clearing garden areas, weeding in cracks and weeding close to plant stems. The long handle allows for a number of other uses. Japanese in origin. From $8 for a short-handled hand weeder to about $20 for a long, left-handed one.
It’s called a cobra head because it looks like a cobra head. The tool works extraordinarily well when weeding around plants (the manufacturer notes that it is especially effective when weeding around garlic). It also helps aerate the soil and is wonderful when creating furrows. $24.
Japanese. It looks like a Bowie knife or a Seal survival knife, but the Hori-Hori might be a more valuable tool. With this tool, a gardener can dig, cut, pry, even saw roots and other hard to remove vegetation. It’s really a great tool when doing plant divisions. About $21.
It’s a pretty tool, with its forged steel blade and its long wooden handle. It’s not as useful than the simpler hand weeder, but still a worthwhile tool in the garden. $13.
Also Japanese, the v-shaped scraper has a handle almost a foot and a half long. The length allows gardeners to weed without kneeling. Instead, using the tool while bending over weeds works very well. $15.
A little more than 15 inches long, this tool is great for weeding but also makes a great instrument for opening planting holes in a garden bed. $20.
A steel shaft with a small prong resembling a fish tail on one end and a hardwood handle on the other. This tool is great for prying weeds, roots and all, out of the ground. It also allows for cutting tap roots. $10
This tool was designed for weeding in ‚”hot beds”. A forged steel strap, shaped like a question mark, and sharpened on both sides. It’s still a useful tool for weeding in soils with a lot of compost or organic material. It works well in a row vegetable garden. $19
