Warm Season Flowers

Flowers can be popping up in the garden at the very start of the spring, carrying through the hottest parts of the summer, or giving a final visual appeal during the fall. Some will even bloom in winter. For flowers that bloom in the summer the plant has been adapted to stay beautiful even in the harshest part of the gardening season. With the heat and humidity of summer, flowers for that season are a special gardener’s delight.

California Poppy

California poppy, Eschscholzia californica, is from the poppy family. It is an easy to grow annual. The plant will get 12 inches tall. Fern like leaves are grayish green and 6 to 8 inches long. Flowers are 2 to 3 inches long, cup shaped, and in colors of red, yellow, or orange. Grow California poppy in poor well drained soil and full sun. Propagate via seed. It is hardy in USDA hardiness zones of 5 to 10.

Scrambling Sky Flower

Scrambling sky flower, Thunbergia battiscombei, is from the acanthus family. It is an evergreen fast growing perennial vine. Without staking it will only get 4 feet in height and 6 feet in width. Leaves are 5 to 7 inches long and are heart shaped. Flowers are hairy and white as a bud turning bluish purple and trumpet shaped later. Grow in any well drained soil in sun to partial shade. Propagate via seed, clump division, or cuttings. It is hardy in USDA hardiness zones of 10 to 12.

Princess Flower

Princess flower, Tibouchina urvilleana, is from the meadow beauty family. It is an easy to grow evergreen shrub that is a fast grower. It is vine like in growth, getting up to 15 feet long with the stems and 10 to 12 feet tall in a mound. Leaves are green and velvety, 2 to 4 inches long. Flowers are in the summer, purple, and 3 inches wide. Grow in rich fertile soil. Propagate via clump division and by cuttings. It is hardy in USDA hardiness zones of 8 to 12.

Cape Lily

Cape lily, Crinum x powellii, is from the amaryllis family. It is an easy to grow evergreen perennial. Leaves are 3 to 4 feet long and strap like. Flowers are 4 inches long, summer to fall, and funnel shaped. Colors will vary between white and pink. Grow in full sun or partial shade in fertile moist soil. Propagate via bulb division in the fall season. It is hardy in USDA hardiness zones of 6 to 11.

Golden Dewdrop

Golden dewdrop, Duranta erecta, is from the verbena family. It is a fast growing shrub that attracts songbirds and butterflies. It will get 18 feet tall and 18 feet wide. Leaves are 1 to 3 inches long. Flowers bloom nearly all year and are on 6 inch racemes. These tubular blooms are blue, violet, or purple. Grow in any soil in full sun or partial shade. Propagate via cuttings, layering, or seed. It is hardy in USDA hardiness zones of 9 to 11.
