There are many things to consider when starting a garden. Some people rush out and buy seeds as the first step, before thinking about how they will accomplish what they really want.
Garden Planning Steps
Site location is among the most important factors for planning a vegetable garden. The garden location needs at least six hours of full sunlight each day. Gardens near a house are more useful since they are usually near a water source, and gardeners can keep an eye on the garden more frequently.
Before ordering seeds or transplants, a plan of the garden showing the plant name and location along with the planting date will help pinpoint the specifics of what needs to be ordered and provide a time-line for planting and harvest.
The garden soil should be turned over through the use of a plow, shovel or tiller at least three weeks before planting. The soil should again be turned over and smoothed when time to plant.
Most soils can use additional organic matter, such as compost or manure. Soil additions should be mixed into the soil well at least a month before planting time. Be careful with uncomposted manures as they need three to four months time to break down before planting otherwise it could cause plant damage.
Check garden soil pH for proper levels, local extension agents should be able to test soil samples and give recommendations on what amendments might be needed. To find local extension agents check the USDA Cooperative Extension System Offices.
For gardens that are not using organic fertilizer, a commercial fertilizer might be needed. Commonly available grades such as 10-10-10 or 6-6-6 are the usual products applied. Check the manufacturer’s guidelines for the application of such products.
Too much water can damage vegetables, however too little water will also hinder your plants. Vegetable plants need different amounts of water depending on the stage of growth they are in and the type of soil planted in. Mature plants need more water but in less frequent applications, younger plants need frequent light applications. Addition of mulch to the garden can aid in retaining moisture in the garden soil. Automated watering devices also help maintain the garden properly. Many watering devices are available depending on the size of your garden, ranging from sprinklers to drip irrigation to fit a range of budgets.
Gardeners can avoid wasting time and money through use of a proper garden plan. Enjoyment of the harvest has many benefits, from economic to health. Planning a vegetable garden greatly increases chances for a successful harvest.
