Valentines Day Flowers: Give a Blue Rose This Valentines Day

Flowers are a common gift to be given at Valentines Day and none is more popular than that of the rose. Whilst a cliché gift, the red rose is one of the most romantic flowers and usually appreciated by the recipient, whether receiving a single stem rose or a half dozen of red roses.

Valentines Day Gift Ideas: From Red Roses to Blue Roses

Whilst the red rose may be the classic flower for Valentines Day, if one is looking for something that is a little bit different, then consider giving a blue rose. The blue rose itself may be seen as containing a special romantic meaning, which is tied to attainable nature of the flower in the natural world.

As such, the blue rose has become the Holy Grail for rose lovers and thus symbolises the virtues of persistence and constant pursuit of perfection in the desire to obtain aesthetic beauty. As such, one may consider that blue roses represent the perfect flowers to give for Valentines Day.

Flowers for Valentines Day: Why Blue Roses are Unusual

Blue roses are unusual for the simple fact that there are no naturally occurring blue roses in the true sense of the phrase. All blue roses must include some sort of intervention on the behalf of the grower or florist. The following are common ways of creating a blue rose:

  • Dyed Blue Roses – The most vibrant of blue roses are made from ordinary roses which have been treated with a blue dye. White roses form the base flower for many of the best roses which are to be dyed blue.
  • Nearly Blue Roses – Sticking to natural methods of growing roses, growers have attempted to create varieties such as Blue Moon which are almost blue roses. Whilst in some cases growers have managed to create varieties which are fairly close to a blue colour, few varieties have the vibrant blue colour which springs to mind when the phrase blue rose is considered.
  • Genetically Modified Roses – Recent developments in genetic engineering have allowed the rose industry to create a genetically modified rose with a blue colour. However, at this point such forms of blue rose are still in the experimental stage and availability extremely limited.
  • So if looking for some unusual flowers to give to a loved one this Valentines Day, consider the giving of a blue rose. Blue roses make a gift which is both suitably symbolic for the occasion as well as something which is just that little bit different.
