Trailing Houseplants Philodendron and Pothos

The trailing philodendron and pothos are among the best tropical vines to include in an indoor garden. Each of these houseplants adds dramatic vertical structure to any collection of houseplants.

Low Light Houseplants

Philodendron and pothos are easy to grow together because they have several plant characteristics and cultural requirements in common. For help in growing these vines, consider that each thrive best:

  • Growing in bright to low light with no direct sun.
  • Placed in a wide range of cool to warm inside temperatures.
  • Withstanding short periods without water.
  • Planted in an all-purpose potting soil, with a humusy texture.

Philodendron and pothos are easy tropical plants to grow, even for beginning gardeners. Their inclusion on the list of tropical plants that benefit indoor air quality is one more reason to add these vines to an indoor garden.

Plant Care for Tropical Vine

Philodendron and pothos are easy tropical vines to grow. But to thrive, these houseplants require basic plant care.

While these tropical vine plants should dry out between weekly watering and gardeners refer to them as drought tolerant, philodendron and pothos are not to be confused with outside plants used in sustainable gardens growing in hot sun. These vines are susceptible to leaf stem or root rot when gardeners water them excessively.

Philodendron and pothos houseplants will grow well with infrequent repotting. However, the plants do need regular fertilizing to thrive. A liquid fertilizer diluted in water and fed every few months or diluted at half strength fed monthly is a standard recommendation.

These prolific vines offer a lot of opportunity to increase the number of houseplants in a collection. Each tropical vine easily propagates from stem cuttings rooted in a light planting medium or clean clear water.

Philodendron for Vertical Gardens

Philodendron scandens ssp.oxycardium has a dark green, heart-shaped leaf that grows well in a vertical garden. This vine will climb upwards when given something to cling to or trails from a suspended container.

Epiphytic vines in native environments need another plant for support. Many philodendrons are epiphytic vines, a characteristic useful in a vertical garden.

Easy to Grow Epipremnum Aureum

Epipremnum aureum is the botanical name for the houseplant routinely called pothos. Pothos also have heart-shaped leaves but with variegated foliage, green with cream or silver splashes. The degree of variegation is determined by the plant’s species or cultivar and the amount of light the plant receives.

Philodendron and pothos are popular tropical vines often used as houseplants because they are easy to grow. These tropical houseplants are among the group of trailing plants that can also be used in outside suspended gardens mixed with flowers.
