Orchids are an extremely popular flower for both the amateur and enthusiast gardener due to their magnificent blooms, the huge number of species and colors to choose from and the size that some can grow to. For an orchid to thrive though, it will need to be living in the correct environment and receive the correct amounts of water. Knowing how to properly water an orchid is a major factor for all orchid lovers. It’s advised to perform some study on your particular orchid so that you can determine its watering requirements. At the same time, it’s also important to have a good general knowledge of orchids and where they originate from.
Orchids are a native plant of the tropical regions of the planet. Tropical climates go hand-in-hand with enormous amounts of rainfall and extreme humidity. Most orchids actually prefer a humidity level of 80%. Obviously this is far more than the average person can bear so to keep yourself and your orchid happy, a mutually beneficial solution is required.
To appropriately humidify them, they will need to be supplied with a steady flow of water. By just placing pebbles in a saucer you can achieve this. The next step is to just put the pot in the saucer and then water the pebbles. You have just created a simple, yet effective, artificial and high-humidity environment for your orchids. As you can see it is very simple but there is one thing you will need to remember – never allow the water to actually touch the orchid pot. If the water does touch the pot, moisture will be drawn up into the potting medium and result in too much water being absorbed.
The biggest mistake you can make is over-watering – which is quite common – particularly if a humidity method isn’t put into practice. The majority of people assume that if the potting bark looks dry then the plant will need to be watered. This is not true – above all for an orchid plant. Even if it looks dry, the bark is actually very good at preserving water. So if the orchid is an indoor one, allow the potting bark to become completely dry before watering it again. The recommended watering cycle is simply once every one or two weeks – and even then, only a little. In their natural environment, some species of orchid grow on tree trunks and branches and it’s quite normal for their root system to totally dry out before it rains again. The recommended fertilizing cycle is done in conjunction with the watering cycle. Every orchid enthusiast can now guarantee their orchid to live a long and healthy life if they implement and adhere to a good routine for watering and fertilizing!
If the proper steps are followed, your orchid will lead a long and healthy life. This means the right amounts of water, potting bark, sunlight and shade and also fertilizing from time to time. Even though orchids are stunning, they can also be moody and erratic at times. But they don’t have to be complicated if you know how to care from them properly.
