Visiting the National Orchid Gardens of Singapore is an unforgettable experience for most visitors. Greeting local residents and visitors from around the world at the entrance to the Gardens is a dynamic water display. This sets the mood for the amazing display of orchids housed in this one location. The gardens are open daily to the public between 8:30 in the morning and 7 in the evening. Admission fees are $5 for adults and $1 for Seniors and Students. Children under 12 are admitted free.
The famous Halia Restaurant is located near the entrance to theOrchid Garden and offers delightful, moderately priced lunch and dinner specials. Publications explaining the hybridization process of orchids going on at the gardens as well as orchid plantlets and souvenirs are available at the Souvenir Kiosk.
Once you enter the Orchid Garden you are immediately greeted by the Crane Fountain. This refreshing water source naturally guides you towards Burkhill Hall, an old colonial bungalow built in the style of tropical homes of the 1800s and now used for special events. The VIP Orchids are located right next to the bungalow. This collection of orchids were selected and named after visiting State Dignitaries and VIP’s within and also outside Singapore.
The next stop along the meandering path inside the Orchid Garden is The Orchidarium where most of the wild orchids in the garden are displayed. Even though not considered as showy as some of the hybrids many of the wild orchids have delicate and intricate blooms and are worth admiring as well as photographing. The Mist House and The Cool House are next on the orchid walk with rare orchids being cultivated and meticulously cared for. The Cool House is an enclosed environment with trees dripping with orchids set in a natural rain forest environment. The cool air, drifting mist off of the crashing waterfall provides a very realistic representation of the high and cooler areas of the tropical forests where orchids grow wild.
The last stop on the walk through this garden is the Yuen-Peng McNeice Bromeliad Collection with over 300 species and 500 hybrids of these most unusual plants. These plants are from Central and South America and thrive in their Singapore home.
The paths in the Orchid garden are wide and reflective. There are places to sit and rest and enjoy the orchids up close. There are plenty of opportunities to take photographs of your favorite orchids. The Gardens are handicap accessible and a popular location for foreign visitors. Tour buses stop here and drop off at the entrance to the Orchid Garden right past the waterfall in the Ginger Garden.
If you have time to walk through the Botanic Gardens on the same day you visit the Orchid Garden you will not be disappointed. Check out Swan Lake and the amazing sculptures scattered around the park. The Botanic Gardens and the Orchid Garden located within its acreage are truly a gift to the people of Singapore and all of those visitors who come to enjoy its beauty and tranquility.
