The All-Year-Round Bloomers: Meet The Ground Orchids

The stunning beauty of orchids and their many varieties are the features that most orchid lovers appreciate so much about them. However, due to belief that they are difficult to look after, most people are wary to grow them. Orchids may have special requirements to grow so you may want to start with something less simple and that is the ground orchids. How to grow a ground orchid? It is not that difficult at all! Find out how to grow a ground orchid with these tips.

What is great about having ground orchids is that they can flower all year round especially in warm climates. So if you are one of those that are impatient in seeing your collection of plants bloom flowers then the ground orchids are for you. The ground orchids originated from the Philippines and Southeast Asia. But you will now find them scattered throughout Florida and Hawaii. The most popular ground orchid is the Spathoglottis. You can have them in a variety of colors such as orange, yellow, white, pink, violet and lavender.

How to Grow Ground Orchids Tips

Unlike your typical orchids, ground orchids do not require the same kind of special attention and unlike them, they can be grown in ordinary plant soil. If you have a small garden in your home, it will be ideal to have ground orchids in your collection of plants. They can also be planted in a pot if you want them displayed inside your home.

When growing your first ground orchid, place them in normal flower beds or pots. They will reproduce themselves in time and when this happens, separate the plants from their original clump. Plant them six inches apart from each other so that they can grow without restraints. It is advisable to add some organic matter to the soil where you plant your ground orchids.

How to grow ground orchids with regards to light requirements? Ground orchids prefer partial shade of light as opposed to other varieties of orchids which need direct full sunlight in the mornings. For the mature ground orchids, watering them once a week is sufficient, when they are flowering; it is best to let the top dry before watering them again. For the younger ground orchids, watering them every other day is needed. However, be sure that the soil is dry before you do so.

Another popular ground orchid to grow is the Chinese ground orchid. These types of orchids are very adaptable to cold conditions compared to other orchids. They have a tendency to die during colder season and bloom again during the warmer ones.
