Moving from Minnesota to Southern California in 1986 was a dream come true for Ron and I who are both avid gardeners. We were excited to get our fingers in the dirt and experience gardening year round in San Diego. The first thing we did was buy the New Western Garden Book published by Sunset in 1985. It was the newest and hottest gardening book on the market at the time. A local Nurseryman stuck a copy of it in our shopping cart when we were visiting one of our first Plant Nurseries on the west coast. Little did we know that we would wear that book out, that it would have to be replaced 20 years later. It became our Garden Bible as we experimented with new plants and grew traditional favorites in our gardens in San Diego.
When a completely updated and revised version of the Sunset Western Garden Book published by the Sunset Publishing Corporation came out in 2007 we had to purchase it. More than 8,000 plants are identified in the new book. Just as in the old edition, the western garden experts common names of plants are cross referenced with their botanical names to help you find specific plant material. Climate locations (zones) are listed for each plant so you will know before you purchase if the plant will grow in your area. The sun exposure and water requirements are also stated as well as the toxicity of the plant if any of the plant parts are known to have toxic or irritating properties.
Also included in the updated and revised edition is a guide to gardening which spells out in photos as well as words basic gardening techniques, must have garden tools, pest control and use of fertilizers.
Besides depending on local nurseries and garden shops in our local areas this book is invaluable.
If you want to grow an organic vegetable garden, a garden of flowers for cutting and floral display, a native plant or drought tolerant garden or a shade garden, this is the book for you to get you started.
