Some Easy Produce to Grow in Containers

Your produce grown in a container will usually require plenty of watering. Even if you have only got a window sill there are still some plants you can grow and use to cook with, and eat.

A good starting point is to grow some herbs, like marjoram, basil and coriander in pots. These are all very versatile in cooking. You can either try growing from seed, or buy small plants. The pots can be put outside in warm weather. Only put basil outside when the weather has really warmed up. Coriander can be grown inside, or outside from late spring to late summer. Marjoram seeds can be grown straight into pots on the window sill. Some of it can be put outside in containers, where it will become bushy, if pruned after flowering.

Tomatoes

Cherry tomatoes can be grown in containers in a warm place. They need plenty sunlight, particularly at the start. You need to stake them up by tying the stem loosely to a stick or cane. Pinch out the side shoots that grow between the stems and the leaves. Tumblers are an easy variety to grow, and you can try these in a hanging basket. Give your tomatoes a weekly feed with a tomato food, and water daily.

Rocket and Other Salad Leaves

Salad leaves are very easy to grow, and you can do so in wooden or plastic trays in suitable compost. You can come and cut leaves as necessary. Growing your salad leaves in this way has become almost more popular than planting conventional lettuce in the garden, as with the salad leaves there is no waste. Slugs like salad leaves so you will need to protect them.

Peppers, Chillies and Courgettes

These can be started by sowing seeds in pots and beginning on the window sill. They will need staking as the weight of the fruit will require support. You can try various types of chillies, and either use when green, or when they have turned to red. These need water, sunlight and warmth.

Strawberries

It is fairly easy to grow a few strawberries in a pot. You can place the pots outside as the weather improves. Your plants should last about 3 years, and are hardy, but will need protecting with fleeces (or bring inside) if it is frosty. Your strawberry plants will need to be well watered in at the start, and regular watering, in the growing season. However, they do not like to be water logged. Slugs also love strawberries.
