Selections of Drought Tolerant Flowering Plants

Creating a water-wise garden can be as simple as finding a good spot in the landscape and planting hardy drought-tolerant plants, trees and shrubs. Drought-tolerant does not have to mean stark, as there are plenty of flowering plants that are water-wise. Mulch with a good layer of pea gravel or stone and it’s a great start to a rock garden.

Oxeye Sunflower

The oxeye sunflower, Heliopsis helianthoides, is easy-to-grow and perennial, attracting butterflies to the landscape. It grows 5 feet high with think dark green leaves and daisy-like blooms of yellow or orange. It has a hardiness range for USDA zones 2 through 9. Plant an oxeye sunflower in fertile soil with full sun, although it tolerates partial shade and drought conditions. It can be propagated by seed, cuttings or by clump division.

Parrotlily

The parrot lily, Alstroemeria psittacina, is a drought-tolerant perennial that attracts hummingbirds to the landscape. It grows up to 30 inches tall with tubular red flowers and clustered foliage. It has a hardiness range for USDA zones 7 through 10. Plant a parrot lily in rich acidic soils with full sun in mild climates and partial shade in hot climates. It can be propagated by seed or by tuber division.

Blanket Flower

The blanket flower, Gaillardia pulchella, is an easy-to-grow flower that attracts butterflies. It can be classified as an annual or a short-lived perennial and grows 3 feet high. Flowers are yellow, copper, red, or orange with green stems. It has a hardiness range of USDA zones 5 through 10. Plant a blanket flower in hot sunny spots with well-drained soil. It can be propagated by seed or root cuttings. Some can be divided. Check cultivar for specific propagation technique needed.

Butterfly Bush

The butterfly bush, Buddleja davidii, is a fast-growing fragrant shrub with the ability to attract butterflies. It grows up to 5 feet tall with varying colored flower clusters and gray-green leaves. It is hardy in USDA zones that range from 5 through 10. It should be planted in well-drained and average soil with full sun or partial sun conditions. It can be propagated by cuttings. This is a shrub that should be cut back so that it will flower better and longer on the new wood growth. It also should not have insecticides used around it.

These flowering plants can bring various colors and textures to the landscape all while making the landscape not as reliant on water to produce their displays. Making a water-wise garden helps give back to the environment.
