Rose Plants for the New Year

Darcey Bussell English Rose – A 2008 David Austin English Rose introduction, the new Darcey Bussell rose is a very attractive medium sized shrub. The roses are a deep red color and have an Old Garden Rose rosette form with a fruit like fragrance. Combined with the healthy growth that the English Roses are known for, the Darcey Bussell rose will make a welcome addition to any new garden area, mixed border, fragrance garden or even a large container.

Oso Easy ‘Peachy Cream’ – Zones 5-9. This 2008 Proven Winners rose is one of a series called ‚”Oso Easy” that are bred to be ground cover roses. ‘Peachy Cream’ is a beautiful, semi-double flowering variety with creamy peach flowers that provide lots of color all summer and well into the fall as well. Plants reach 12-36″ tall and are disease resistant. The bright rose colors contrast against the dark green foliage so consider this rose as a fragrant ground cover option in your gardens this new year.

Flower Carpet Pink Supreme Ground Cover Rose – Zones 4-10. A Monrovia 2008 introduction, this ground cover rose has semi-double flowers that are rose pink and tinged with white. A steady blooming rose plant with masses of flowers makes this a great selection for any flower garden or perennial border. Pink Supreme Rose grows about 2′ tall and 3′ wide and also makes a nice selection for a dramatic container planting. Mass plantings of this ground cover rose would be a nice effect for cottage gardens as well and the attractive pink color will combine well with other perennials and annual flowers.

Lovestruck Floribunda Rose – An attractive new shrub rose introduced by Jackson and Perkins, the ‘Lovestruck’ rose has attractive bi-tone flower petals. The ‘Lovestruck’ rose flowers are dark pink colored with white markings on the petals and have a spicy fragrance, though light. These roses make a great cut flower with the attractive bud shape that many hybrid teas have also but at only 3 ½’ tall the shrubs fit into a cutting garden space with ease.

Dream Come True Grandiflora – A fantastic Week’s Rose introduction, the ‘Dream Come True’ grandiflora rose lives up to its name by taking the All-America Rose Selection Award for 2008. The flowers are large golden blooms with dark pink edges that have a mild tea fragrance. The shrubs are tall with full, bushy growth that will make a nice addition to a rose garden. Described as ‚”very floriferous” the ‘Dream Come True’ rose should rebloom nicely throughout the growing season.
