Pond Ornaments for Frog Lovers

In any garden store, the avid gardener will find a myriad of gnomes, fairies, angels, snails, and even frogs to take home. Made of clay, copper, stone, and steel, these frog garden ornaments are perfect finds for the amphibian-lover’s backyard pond. After all, what better place is there for a frog to live than beside a fern or a group of rushes?

Choosing Garden Statues that Last

Frog lovers will be disappointed if their statue only lasts for a single year. For the best value, choose statues and water features that are made of copper, brass, steel, or stone. Copper will age to a beautiful green patina, perfect for a frog! Statues that are hollow inside tend to crack if left outdoors for long periods of time. These statues are best brought in during the winter to allow them to last in the summer garden.

Water Fountains and Frog Bird Baths

Many frog ornaments come as piped water features. These ornaments spit water out of their mouths – a delight and a surprise when hidden at the side of the pond. Larger amphibian water features are available for the center feature of the pond. For example, the Lazy Frog ornament sits in the center of a pond on a lily pad, spitting water across the pond. It is widely available at garden stores. For those who want to avoid plugging in a fountain, solar frog fountains are also available.

While bird bath statues generally feature a concrete bird, some of them have little frogs perched at the water’s edge. These are tiny ponds within themselves.

Amphibian and Pond Wall Sculptures

If a pond is located on a patio or in a small backyard, a wall sculpture of reeds or bamboo adds a backdrop to the pond, making it feel larger and more. Wall sculptures may features birds, frogs, dragonflies and other pond animals.

Frog Pond Lights

Looking for solar lights for the yard? Some frog ornaments come with solar lights embedded in them. During the day, this garden art adds visual interest around the pond. Some frog lights also float on artificial lily pads in the pond. At night, the lights reflect into the water and the garden, creating a peaceful and reflective space, perfect for a pond-side bench.

Whimsical Variations on the Frog Theme

Frogs have been featured in so many stories that there are infinite whimsical scenarios available for the gardener to create beside a backyard pond. Add a witch or fairy ball to the pond beside the frog, and turn any frog into the frog prince. In the child’s story, a frog retrieves a ball for a princess, who scorns the frog and then learns to love him.

Create a set of garden features that complement each other. A frog statue goes well with a dangling dragonfly or a snail. Place the frog as if it were just about to find its next meal. A whimsical frog that spits water across the pond can spray water into a bird bath.

Encourage Real Frogs to Visit the Garden

To add another element to an amphibian-inspired garden, add a group of rocks or a broken clay pot to a quiet area of the pond. Plant reeds or other aquatic pond-side plants and the pond will become a good hiding place for frogs.

For gardeners who love frogs, there are many options for beautiful garden art, both commercially available and made by local artisans. Consider inviting real frogs to the garden as well, with plants and rockeries designed for amphibians to hide.
