Overcast skies and a lack of sunlight make November flowering plants all the more worthwhile, bringing a glimmer of light to the darkest recesses of a winter garden. To have flowering plants in your garden from month to month you may be interested in taking a look at Plants with October Flowers – A Gardening Guide which offers some more interesting planting ideas.
Camellias are a mainstay of winter flowering gardens, coming in a variety of colours. Their dark-green evergreen leaves are valuable all year round. Camellia sasanqua ‘Narumigata’s pink-tinged white flowers seem to glow against the background of dark leaves. The flowers begin to open out in October and emit a lovely scent once fully opened. Average growing, they will eventually reach a height and spread of 6 m x 3 m.
Viburnum x bodnantense ‘Charles Lamont’ or bodnantense ‘Dawn’ have strongly-scented pink-flushed flowers followed by purple fruits appearing on bare stems from November to March. These shrubs, with an upright rather than spreading habit, will reach 3 m x 2 m.
What would the gardener do without clematis? There is pretty much at least one clematis in flower for every month of the year. November is no exception. For an unusual clematis originating in Nepal try Clematis napaulensis. It is extraordinary because in early summer it loses all its foliage, and remains dormant until autumn when the new leaves appear. The clusters of scented green-yellow flowers with purple stamens (looking almost fuschia-like) appear in November and are replaced by fluffy, large seed heads, which make for an interesting sight in a winter garden. Reaches a height and depth of 3 m x 1.5 m.
Cyclamens are the most lovely, delicate flowers to brighten up a winter garden. Although only reaching around 12 cm tall planted en masse to form a large carpet they can look quite stunning. Cyclamen hederifolium (sowbread) flowers from October to January. The delicate, fragrant white or pink flowers usually appear before the heart-shaped marble leaves, which still put on an attractive show after the flowers have faded. Cyclamens are usually happiest in woodland gardens or in shade, but this variety originated in the Mediterranean and will be equally at home in the sun.
If this cyclamen with November flowers has whetted your appetite for more winter flowers you may want to look at Plants with December Flowers – A Gardening Guide or at Plants with Winter Flowers for further planting ideas.
