Plants That Thrive in Full Sun on the South Side of the House

The plants that flourish on the south side of the house love full sun; they soak it up as it moves from east to west. These plants need to be tough; drought tolerant and heat tolerant plants are good choices for the south side of a house. In addition to sun requirements, the most important considerations when planting flowers are your U.S. Department of Agriculture plant hardiness zone, the soil and amount of moisture the flowers receive.

Yarrow

Yarrow is a tough, drought-tolerant plant that spreads by rhizomes, or underground runners. Keep an eye on this plant so that it doesn’t take over the garden. The newest varieties of yarrow have pink or red flowers that bloom on grass-green leaves. Traditional yarrow flowers usually bloom in the white, cream and yellow range and have gray-green leaves. Yarrow is a nice addition to a bouquet and makes a good dried flower. The USDA Hardiness Zones for yarrow are 3 through 9.

Salvia

This drought-tolerant plant holds up well under all day sun on the south side of the house. The spiky flowers bloom in colors of white, purple, red, lavender and pink and attract bees and hummingbirds to the garden. The bush will grow up to 4 feet high and as wide. Salvia is drought-tolerant after it’s established. Salvia grows in USDA Hardiness Zones 4 through 9 and is not particular about soil.

Citrus Trees

Pick a lemon, lime or orange tree to grow on the south side of your home if you live in USDA Hardiness Zones 9 and 10. Citrus loves full sun and does even better next to a stucco or brick wall, according to the University of California. The wall material absorbs heat during the day and slowly releases it overnight, benefitting the citrus.

Geraniums

Geraniums are another drought-and-heat tolerant flower that will try to take over in a south-facing garden. This plant loves full sun and is not fussy about soil type. Many newer varieties of geraniums bloom almost continuously and the blossoms fill the garden with color for a long time. Geraniums will grow as an annual in USDA Hardiness Zones 4 through 9 and as a perennial in warmer climates.

Verbena

Verbena will thrive in full sun on the south side of the house. Its brilliant flowers attract butterflies. The flowers bloom in colors of deep-orange, red, yellow, purple and white. Once established verbena is drought tolerant. It grows about 1 foot high and about as wide. Verbena can be grown as an annual in USDA Hardiness Zones 3 through 10 and as a perennial in warmer zones.

Full Sun Plants

There are many choices for plants that love all-day sun and are drought tolerant. These plants take minimal care and offer maximum beauty.
