Planting Bulbs in Minnesota

Minnesota winters are famous for the cold and snow, but Minnesota springs are a beautiful thing. Many gardeners and homeowners have planted beautiful flower gardens that include a variety of bulb plants. However, proper planting of hardy bulbs is essential to produce flowers year after year. Preparing the soil, proper watering and fertilizing will help ensure long lasting plants.

Preparing to Plant

Bulbs should be planted in the fall when right after the first frost. Many bulbs need well-drained soil that has a PH balance between six and seven. Most bulbs prefer full sun, while others like the shade. Read the directions that came with the bulb when it was purchased for details on the specific bulb. These directions should also include how deep to plant the bulb.

Choose a location with the correct light for the flower. Dig a hole that is four inches deeper than the recommended depth for planting the bulb. If the dirt in the area does not drain well it is a good idea to dig a hole that is three times wider than the bulb. Mix the dirt with lime to adjust the PH level as needed. Separate out enough dirt to fill the bottom four inches of the hole and mix this dirt with phosphorous and organics such as compost. This will provide extra nutrients and increase the drainage of the soil to prevent root rot. Put this soil in the bottom of the hole. Mix the remaining dirt with organics to increase the drainage and add nutrients.

Planting the Bulb

Place the bulb in the hole with the point facing up. Refill the hole with the prepared dirt and cover the bulb. Water the area thoroughly. There is no need to add fertilizer. Mark the spot with a stake if desired so you will be able to watch for the shoots in the spring.

The bulb will sprout in the spring and provide a beautiful bloom. Many bulb flowers require no additional care. When the flower has been in the ground for at least five years it is a good idea to dig it up in the summer after it has finished blooming and died back. The bulb many have created several other bulbs that can be divided off the original and planted for more flowers.

Tulips and other bulb flowers are some of the first signs of spring in Minnesota and they are a joy to behold in any garden or yard.
