Plant an Indoor Herb Garden

Growing herbs indoors is not difficult. Gather a few supplies, choose herb seeds based on personal preference and watch the herb bouquet blossom.

Supplies for Indoor Herb Gardens

  1. Find a sunny location, preferably a south or west facing window. Typically a northern facing window will not give enough sunlight for the herbs to grow successfully. Look for at least 5 hours of sunlight and an area away from drafts.
  2. Find a container, or several containers, to fit in the chosen location. Any container will do- from a shiny new one purchased at the garden center to an old bucket. Consider how many herbs will be planted and choose container sizes accordingly.
  3. Purchase good quality all-purpose compost. Place an inch of gravel along the bottom of the container and then add the compost on top.
  4. Purchase good quality plants or seeds. Seek out healthy looking plants from a reputable garden center. If planting from seed, check expiration dates to ensure seeds are current.
  5. Supply growing herbs with the right amount of water. Watering once a week in a well-drained pot will allow plants to flourish without creating soggy roots.

Herbs to Grow in an Indoor Garden

Most any herb that grows outdoors can be successfully grown indoors. Herbs are a personal preference. The most commonly used herbs for cooking are basil, oregano, chives, mint, rosemary, and thyme. All six of these herbs will grow well indoors. Oregano needs the most sunlight of the herbs in this group, so plant accordingly. Other herbs to grow indoors include:

  • Chervil
  • Parsley
  • Cilantro
  • Dill
  • Sage
  • Tarragon

What to do with Herbs

Cooking with herbs is the most popular way to use the plants. Adding herbs to meat rubs, sauces, soups salad dressings and salads can create a wonderful flavor. Many beverages feature herbs as well, such as mint in tea and mojitos. Experiment with different herbs in various recipes. Herbs can be frozen by placing them in freezer bags for later use.

Herbs can also be used for:

Potpourri or sachets

  • Hanging cut herbs and allowing them to dry gives options for mixing and creating potpourris and sachets. Dried herbs can also be used in wreaths or placed around the house in bunches to provide pleasing aromas.

Herbal Vinegars

  • Herbal vinegar makes a great salad dressing and they are beautiful as a hostess gift.

Fragrance and ornamentation

  • Plant herbs such as lavender, thyme, mint, bee balm and winter savory for wonderful aromas and interesting plant design.

Growing herbs indoors can be a satisfying hobby for anyone. Read about the uses of various herbs and select a few to try at home.
