Pink Flowering Plants for a Single Color Garden Theme

When it comes to doing something different in a garden, something to stand out from the crowd it is wise to consider a single color garden theme. However, in order for this chosen color to make a difference, to make that elusive statement, it must be singular in its purpose. The color scheme must be decisive, deliberate and dedicated and it must last the whole year. So the best way forward is to plan for each season.

Choosing Plants for a Single Color Garden Theme

When starting the color-scheme garden choosing the plants can be a bit of a chore but remember that the mix can be spring bulbs, annuals, perennials, woody or succulent shrubs, evergreen or deciduous shrubs, climbers or ground cover and so forth – the only obligation is that all bloom must be the same color. In some instances a shrub with the correct foliage color will be an added seasonal bonus. So, for an overall pink garden theme start with the following bulbs and plants.

Pink Plants for Spring

Getting started means planning some months in advance, spring bulbs should be planted in the Fall.

  • ‚”Hyacinth Orientalis“. Pink flowering Hyacinth. Plant these perennial bulbs in the Fall and enjoy their heady fragrance in the early Spring.
  • ‚”Narcissus Passinale” is a beautiful shade of pink. Another perennial which can be planted at the same time as the hyacinth bulbs.
  • A true pink charmer for any sized garden is the Flowering Cherry Tree. This deciduous tree will be completely covered with blossoms every Spring.
  • ‚”Camellia Brigadoon” is an evergreen shrub with masses of very early pink blooms. They like an acid soil and can withstand cold winters.
  • ‚”Clematis Markham’s Pink” is a deep pink easy to grow climber suitable for smaller gardens as it is a slow grower. It does well in either sun or shade in any well drained soil.

Pink Plants for Summer

When summer comes around the choice for pink blooms is even more abundant than during the Spring and some favorites are:

  • ‚”Clematis Pink Perfection” is a vigorous grower and will require a strong support system. In full sun it is a prolific bloomer and is often considered the best pink clematis of all.
  • ‚”Tanacetum Eileen May Robinson” is a daisy like plant, often called “Painted Daisy” and it grows to about 45cm. with masses of pink blooms in early summer.
  • ‚”Dianthus Doris” is a small, carnation like perennial flower growing to about 20cm. with fragrant deep pink flowers all summer long. It likes a sunny sheltered spot with good drainage.

Other summer pink flowering plants might include, Petunia, Lavatera,Verbena and Peonies.

Pink Plants for Fall and Winter

One delicate pink flower joining the end of summer to the beginning of the fall is ‚”Cyclamen“. This robust little perennial likes to grow in light shade and once the blooms fade the gray/green foliage will last through the winter. Other pink flowering Fall plants are:

  • ‚”Sedum Autumn Joy” is a pink flower enjoyed by butterflies and it grows to about 45cm with pink flower clusters on the top of its tall stems. It likes full sun and plenty of it in a well drained soil.
  • ‚”Hydrangea Macrophylla Hamburg” is a large deciduous shrub growing up to 2m. tall so ample space is needed to enjoy the superb pink flower heads, these are also called ‚”Mophead Hydrangea”
  • ‚”Viburnum x Bodnantense Dawn“. This is a fast growing deciduous shrub and it blooms throughout the winter.

Whatever month of the year is to hand there will always be a pink flower to charm it and a trusted favorite is the ‚”Buddleia or Butterfly Bush, Pink Delight”. It is a summer flowering shrub with the added bonus of attracting butterflies to the garden. Also, an ideal specimen shrub is the deciduous ‚”Deutzia Rosealind” as it will be covered in pink flowers from late Spring to early Summer.
