Lavender – The Multi-purpose Herb

Lavender is an herb native to the Mediterranean region used by the ancient Egyptians in the mummification of bodies. From the latin word lavare meaning “to wash”, lavender has long been a favorite for its fragance.

Lavender has been appreciated for its aromatic fragrance, yet lavender has long been recorded a natural remedy for ailments that include insomnia, anxiety, depression and moodiness. Recent studies suggest lavender may be as effective as some prescription sedatives in treating sleeping disorders (check with your physician before doing any alternative treatments).

Lavender has been documented for medicinal purposes. Lavender is an alternative treatment for many conditions and symptoms.

  • restlessness
  • insomnia
  • abdominal complaints
  • rheumatism

Lavender is commercially made from the dried flowers, dried herb and essential oil. Lavender comes in the following forms:

As an herbal remedy, lavender can be used internally to treat stress, depression, digestion and nervousness. By adding 1-3 drops of essential oil per sugar cube then adding to a cup of tea provides a refreshing sweetener with added properties. Also, as an inhalation, add 2-4 drops of essential oil to 2 cups of boiling water and inhale the steam for healing benefits of soothing respiratory ailments and nervousness while acting as a sleep aide.

Externally, lavender oil can safely be used full-strength on the skin. Lavender has been found to be a natural anti-septic, to be an anti-fungal agent along with anti-bacterial. To soothe sunburned skin, add a few drops of essential oil to a spray bottle of water and mist the sunburned areas. Apply lavender essential oil to insect bites and stings, cuts, scrapes and abrasions. Lavender is a natural anti-septic, destroying any germs that can cause infections.

Lavender is commonly used in decorating flowering gardens, around the home and of course in cosmetics; yet it has been favored in recipes to add a unique flavor to food. Lavender can be used in jellies, honeys, drinks, to flavor grilled meats (beef, fish or poultry) and in baking recipes such as cookies, breads and cakes. Adding lavender to fruit desserts and salads is an easy way to spice up a light meal.

Lavender starts blooming in early spring providing months of fragrance and color on through the fall. The largest lavender event in North America is held every summer in Washington State. The lavender grown in this area of North America has received recognition world-wide for its superior quality and fragrance.
