How to Use a PVC Trellis

Learning how to use a PVC trellis can bring organization, permit a larger growing space and provide an attractive look to all garden areas. The inexpensive materials consist of glue, PVC pipe and fittings, and the many different designs and uses are never-ending. Trellises definitely have advantages but they are not without a few disadvantages.

Advantages and Disadvantages of PCV Trellises

The advantages of growing plants with PVC trellises are to keep them off the ground and protect them from some of the hot rays of the sun. It also allows for more air circulation encouraging better growth and less rotting; furthermore, trellises make it much easier to pick flowers, fruits and vegetables.

The disadvantages of growing plants with PVC trellises are that they can be blown down by strong winds, causing breakage of the plants. As with all trellises, the stronger it is built, the more durable it will be. Heavy plants may need additional support and some plants require some training in order to climb.

How to Use PVC Trellises

Using PVC trellises as dividers in gardens and flowers beds works nicely for organizing and adds a clean neat look. The use of different sizes of trellises to divide areas and support plants works well in many spaces and adds beauty to the yard and garden area.

PVC trellises are good for plant support as long as the proper size is used. Thin PVC should be used where wire trellises are needed. This would include berries, grapes, clematis, morning glory, sweet peas, ivy and other delicate climbing plants.

Thicker PVC should be used for supporting heavier plants and these types of plants may require being tied to the trellis. Plants such as tomatoes, pole beans, cucumbers and small melons are ideal plants for growing on thicker PVC trellises.

For outside areas such as patios, decks, hot tubs surroundings or other areas where privacy is desired, PVC trellises can provide a secluded area. Designing them with tighter spacing between the pipes and planting vines will achieve seclusion.

Ideas for Decorating with PCV Trellises

Decorating with PVC trellises can add loveliness to any landscaping, making it much more attractive. PVC pipe can be painted to match any décor. Here are some ideas for getting started.

  • Adding a strongly built and painted PVC trellis anchored to the ground behind a garden or patio bench can create an eye-catching back for the bench.
  • Trellis arches can be constructed out of PVC pipe and flowering vine plants can be trained to cover them.
  • Make fan shaped trellises or other shapes to add uniqueness to landscaping.
  • Add trellises to barrows and flower boxes, or construct trellises with attached birdhouses.

Knowing how to use a PVC trellis does prove to be a simple and convenient way to generate more growing space. Trellises may have a few disadvantages but the advantages are many. With a little imagination and some ideas to get started, the possibilities for uses and decorating with PVC trellises are endless.
