How to Increase Your Amaryllis Bulb Supply

Amaryllis bulbs are typically grown as houseplants during the Christmas holidays and often planted in the garden after the danger of frost has passed. Garden centers in warmer climates sell a garden variety in the spring.

With proper care an amaryllis bulb will last many years. These bulbs vary in price depending on the variety but can be costly.

It is possible to produce more bulbs that will bloom in 2 to 5 years, depending on the method and growing conditions. This can be accomplished using one of several methods.

Separate Amaryllis Offsets from the Original Bulb

Amaryllis bulbs often produce an offset that grows attached to the adult bulb. These offsets, known as bulblets, take 2 to 3 years to produce a bloom.

When the offset is about 1/3 the size of the adult bulb, it can be removed. Separate by either breaking them apart or with a sharp sterile knife. Leave part of the basal plate with roots on each piece. A dusting of root hormone can be applied before the offset is repotted.

Amaryllis Seeds Produce New Bulbs

When the amaryllis flower is in bloom, the stamen and pollen (a yellow powder) are often visible. If the plant is outside it may self pollinate with wind and insects.

If the bulbs are grown in the house, a small artist brush or eye liner brush can be used to pollinate the flower. If the process is successful, the seed pod will swell. Continue to water the plant as usual and in approximately a month the pod will crack open. The seeds can then be removed.

Several germination methods will work but many gardeners start by soaking the seeds.

How to Germinate Amaryllis Seeds by the Soaking Method

  • Soak them in water in a clean container.
  • Keep them warm
  • Look for signs of root growth. This will take several weeks.
  • When you see a white root, carefully remove the seed from the water.
  • Plant in seed starting mix or a sterile garden soil.
  • Water and keep warm.
  • A grass-like growth will emerge in a few weeks
  • These will take approximately 3 years to produce a flower

Twin Cuttage Method of Dividing Amaryllis

Another method of amaryllis reproduction is twin scale cuttage. Cuttage should be done after the bulbs have finished blooming and grown a few months

  • A bulb is sliced vertically in 4 or more pieces, Larger pieces will produce a bloom sooner.
  • Apply a fungicide powder to the pieces. Dust with rooting hormone, if desired
  • Plant the slices in vermiculite or a mixture of peat and sand. Leave about half of the slice above the soil line.
  • Keep moist and warm. In about eight weeks a small bulb, followed by leaves should appear.
  • Depending on the climate, bulbs should bloom in two to three years.

With patience and proper growing conditions, gardeners can grow new amarllis bulbs for Holiday and outdoor gardens.
