How to Get Rid of Clover in Your Yard

Clover is a small, green plant that can sprout throughout your grass without much warning. Clover doesn’t do much harm to the grass, but if you want the perfect lawn you may want to rid yourself of clover. Unlike most other weeds, you do not want to coat clover with harsh chemicals because the clover is intertwined with the grass, resulting in the death of your grass, in addition to the clover. Instead, there are mild methods available for removing the clover, while keeping your word class lawn in tack.

Remove Clover

Remove as much of the clover as you can by hand. The root system for clover is not very deep, so it pulls out easily. Clover also grows in patches so most of the weed is confined to only certain areas in the lawn. Doing this helps aerate the lawn and promotes grass growth. It is best to perform this task before mowing the yard. When you mow the grass it spreads out seeds from the clover, which actually increases the overall clover coverage and increases the amount of time it is going to take to rid your lawn of the plant.

Reseed Lawn

Reseed the area where the clover has been removed with grass seed. If you don’t, you are going to have bald spots in the grass, which leaves the lawn open to new weeds growing up in the open areas. Reseed the area as quickly as you can, before other plants take up residence.

Compost and Fertilize Lawn

Spread organic compost to the areas in the lawn affected by the clover. This is also going to help promote grass growth and add more nitrogen into the soil, which speeds up the grass growth process. You can create your own compost from discarded vegetables and plants, or you can purchase the compost from your local plant nursery store. When buying the compost, make sure it says ‚”organic,” otherwise you may add unwanted chemicals to the lawn

Wait a few weeks to allow the grass time to sprout and grow. During this time you may see some clover poke back up, but it shouldn’t be as bad as before. Remove the clover as soon as you see it. This ensures it does not spread back out over your lawn.

Apply an organic weed and feed product to the grass. This will give a final knockout punch to the clover while bringing your grass and lawn to life.
