How to Care for a Peace Lily Plant

If you love houseplants but don’t have a lot of time to devote to caring for them, then your best option is the peace lily. This is the perfect plant for an office because although it prefers natural, unfiltered light, it can thrive in a room without a window as long as there is artificial light of some kind. This plant is very beautiful with large dark green leaves and white flowers. As such it can bring a ray of sunshine to any room décor.

Water Requirements

The soil in the pot for a peace lily must be moist at all times. Since the plant uses very little water, this means you only need to water the plant about once a week. Check the soil to see if it seems to be drying out before you add any water because too much water is hazardous for a peace lily. When the soil is soggy, the roots will start to rot.

The peace lily does not do well when watered with chlorinated water. A little chlorine in the water is fine, but if you live in a city it is best not to use tap water for the plant. If, however, you have no other choice, let the water stand in a container over night before you water the plant with it. The water should also be at room temperature.

How to Know When the Plant Needs to be Watered

The sight of yellowish or brown leaves on the peace lily is the first sign that the soil has dried out too much and needs water. If left in this state too long, the plant will die.

Fertilizing the Peace Lily

During its growing season, the peace lily does need to be fertilized about once a month. Standard fertilizer that you would use for any houseplants is perfectly fine to use but it needs to be diluted more than normal. Experts recommend that you use about 25% more water in diluting the fertilizer before you add it to the soil around the plant.

Temperature

You don’t need to be overly concerned about having the peace lily near a heat source. It will grow and thrive in normal room temperature. As long as you are comfortable with the temperature in the room, it is fine for the plant.

Bug Resistant

For the most part the peace lily is resistant to infestations of bugs. Should you notice any bugs on the leaves, you can easily get rid of them by wiping the leaves with a small amount of rubbing alcohol on a soft cloth. It is a good idea to clean the leaves in this manner from time to time to keep them looking clean and keep them free of dust so that plant can get the air it needs.

As you can see you don’t need to have a green thumb to enjoy the beautiful blooms of a Peace Lily.
