Herbal Tea Garden: Nature’s Stress Reliever

As a stress filled society we are always looking for a quick, easy way to relieve that stress. A nice cup of herbal tea fills that need.

Herbal Tea Garden

Any bright, sunny location will do as far as starting an herbal tea garden. This location can be in the garden or on a sunny windowsill. Just keep in mind that any type of mint will try to take over a garden so plant in a raised bed or in a container.

Seeds Verses Live Plants

Starting herbs from seeds offers a stress relief activity in itself. This can be as simple as sprinkling seeds on top of soil, labeling, and watering. Keep a watch on the soil moisture. If it is too wet the seeds/seedlings will rot. If the soil is too dry the seeds/seedlings will dry up and die.

The use of live plants can give the novice gardener instant gratification and can save growing time while providing the materials to create herbal tea immediately. But while this may be the easiest route to take the plants still need care.

The general principles of herbal tea are easy. Harvest leaves and flowers in the early morning. The herbal oils that provide flavor are at their highest concentration during this time. Then place the herbal material in a teapot, cup or tea ball. Pour near boiling water over the herbal material and steep for 5-10 minutes. Remove herbal material and enjoy.

How to Create Your Own Herbal Tea

Herbal teas can be individualized by the creator or can consist of a single herb but regardless of which you choose the steps are simple. Herbs can be used fresh or dried. Simply tear and bruise your fresh herbs and place in teapot or cup. Pour hot water over the herbs and let steep for 5 minutes. Strain your tea to remove plant material and enjoy. If you are using dried material simply place dried herbs in tea ball or cheese cloth. Steep as above and remove tea ball or cheese cloth before drinking.

Herbal teas can also be used to treat certain ailments. Peppermint is used to treat upset stomachs while chamomile is used to calm and help with sleep.
