Garden Tools for Increasing Vegetable Harvest

There are many garden tools on the market. Gardeners should evaluate their needs before purchasing a garden tool that might not fit their particular garden.

Determining Garden Tool Needs

The minimum garden tool set would be a rake, a hoe and a spading tool. With that basic entry point a gardener can get started with small gardens like a raised bed or square foot garden.

Items such as twine and stakes can help make straight rows as seeds are planted. Transplants are usually put in the garden with the help of a trowel, though a shovel or hoe might suffice.

Other items like spray bottles, yardsticks, fertilizer spreaders and crop identification markers make gardening easier.

Speeding Garden Preparation

Larger vegetable gardens have more soil to prepare and a hand plow or rototiller will greatly increase the speed and ease of preparation. Small garden tractors can also improve upon speed and ease, with the use of sleeve hitch attachments like a single bottom plow or disc for soil preparation.

Small garden tractors also spend most of their time as lawn mowers, so they have a dual purpose. However, the distinction should be made between a lawn mowing tractor and a small garden tractor. While they may look similar, lawn tractors do not usually have the ability to use sleeve hitch attachments and can only pull things like utility carts. Wheel weights and ag tires are available to add traction to small garden tractors if needed. Cultivators, for maintaining weed control as the small plants grow, also come in a variety of sizes from hand operated to tractor attachments.

Care of Garden Tools

Hand tools should be cared for by keeping them clean while in garden tool organizer and also well sharpened. Make sure any loose bolts or screws are tightened, and sharpen cutting edges with a file or grindstone. Clean any rusted tools with steel wool, sandpaper, or a rust-remover and then rub down the metal with an oily rag to prevent future rust. Wood handles should be rubbed down with linseed oil. Tool care greatly extends the life and minimizes cost.

New tools are constantly coming out to try and solve particular garden problems. A visit to a garden center, either online or in person, will be easier once a vegetable garden plan has been completed. With plan in hand, proper sized garden equipment can be evaluated.

Make Gardening Easier

Whether the garden is a kitchen garden or a very large vegetable garden, a tool is out there that will make the gardener’s life easier. The right garden tools give gardeners the ability to enjoy what would otherwise be a lot of hard work.
