Flower pots can be used to grow plants and flowers that do not normally grow in certain climates. Brugmansia, commonly known as Gabriel’s trumpet flower, is grown in a tropical environment. However, it can thrive if placed in a large planter inside of a warm and controlled atmosphere. During the summer months, the tropical flower can be placed outside.
Trees and shrubs can also be grown in flower pots. They make great decoration pieces in front of a window or can be used as fillers in the corner of any room. Herbs and vegetables can also be grown in garden pots and containers.
Garden pots and containers are convenient for renters. They can be used on a balcony or be placed in a window. Indoor hanging planters can be conveniently moved outdoors during nice days and brought back inside overnight. The renter can easily move the flower pots to another spot for a different look. The pots and containers can also be moved from home to home.
Location: Where the garden pots and containers will be placed is an important aspect in choosing the right ones. Before purchasing any pot or container, design a plan based on the area where they will go. If the goal is to place pots and containers on a deck, be sure to purchase the correct size. Small flower pots on a big deck will be too small. If using balcony space, choose window planters to hang over the railing. This type of planter allows those passing by to see the flowers as they are growing.
Color: Consider the color theme for the area. It is possible to purchase pots and containers the same color as the area they will be placed. Some gardeners like to choose colors to create a theme or use colors that are the same as their home. Others like to add variety by purchasing flower pots in different colors.
Size: Take into account the type of plants that will be used. Most plants start out the same size when planted but they grow at different rates and sizes. Larger plants like trees will need to be planted in large planters. Some plants grow better when the roots are close together. This type of plant will need a small flower pot.
Material: Decide how much time will be spent taking care of the flower pots. This will determine the material of the pots that should be purchased. Certain materials handle hot or cold weather better than others. For instance, ceramic garden planters such as terracotta tend to dry when placed in direct sunlight for long periods of time. Plastic flower pots can endure any type of weather. Self-watering flower pots are available for those that tend to forget to water their plants.
Since simple and decorative planter pots come in many shapes and sizes, there is no limit on what can be used. Try going the untraditional route by using items from around the house to grow flowers. Use an old tire, a used boot, or an empty coffee can to plant flowers. Anything that holds soil will work. Be sure to place holes at the bottom of containers to allow water to drain.
When working with children in the garden, give them old yogurt or butter containers to grow their plants. They are not fancy but are free and the kids will get a kick out of them. For a vintage look, use an old wash tub, wheel barrel, or toolbox. Paint a couple of old chairs to use a holder for pots and containers.
