Small outdoor spaces present a unique gardening challenge. Traditional garden plantings and flower beds take up too much valuable space, but colorful flower blooms and textured foliage is still desired. Climbing vines that bloom are the perfect solution for gardening in small outdoor spaces. The vertical growth of climbing takes up only small amount of landscape space, and their growing habits can be used to provide shade or camouflage in a small outdoor space.

Mandevilla is an easy care climbing vine that gives a tropical feel to an outdoor space with it’s evergreen foliage and large, exotic looking blooms. Mandevilla can be grown in a container and trained to climb up on porch or patio railings, reaching a mature height of about 10 feet. Mandevilla will produce exotic red, white or pink flowers all summer and provide deep green foliage year around in mild climates. In northern climates with cold winters, mandevilla will die down to ground level and go into dormancy after the first frost, returning to life in the spring.
The clematis climbing vine is popular for its easy care growing habits and its wide range of bloom colors. Clematis will reach a mature height of about 10 feet and loves a sunny location, as long as the vine’s roots are kept cool with a thick layer of mulch. Clematis climbing vines come in many varieties, with some of the vines producing blooms only in spring, other varieties that bloom all summer and some of the newer varieties of clematis vines produce summer-long blooms and a spectacular color of fall foliage.
Wisteria is a favorite choice for vertical gardening for both it’s climbing ability and fragrance. Wisteria is quite often used to create a living roof on top of pergolas and arbors. Wisteria is a fast growing climbing vine that will produce clusters of purple hanging flowers in the spring. A mature wisteria vine will become heavy and will need a sturdy support system to grow on.
The classic climbing rose is a romantic and sentimental beauty that can be trained to grow up and over any outdoor structure. Trellises and arbors are a favorite vertical way to train climbing roses, but the climbing rose canes can also be trained to grow vertical against the side of a garage, out building or other outdoor structure that needs camouflaged. Many varieties of climbing roses will produce fragrant rose blooms all summer when planted in a sunny location and in fertile, well-drained soil.
Small outdoor spaces don’t have to be void of living, blooming beauty. Climbing vines will provide fragrance, beauty, shade and camouflage while taking up only a very small footprint of outdoor garden space.
