Gardeners living in temperate climates can enjoy the sight of the pink waxy blooms of the Chilean Bell Flower, Lapageria rosea, also known by the common name Copihue. A perennial climber, Lapageria rosea would prosper in flowering on a wall with 15 ft or 5 metres of available space to spread.

Buying Lapageria rosea or Chilean Bell Flower

The Chilean Bell Flower extends its distinctive pink waxy blooms in temperate climates throughout the months of Fall or Autumn. When planning to buying Lapageria rosea or Chilean Bell Flower from a gardening mail order catalogue, consider that it is possible to propogate, in springtime, the perennial climbing plant from Chile. Looking After Lapageria rosea or Chilean Bell Flower

Lapageria rosea will benefit from wall-installed support soon after planting. A wire system will work well to support the twining climbing plant during growth and development and allow the blooms to move.

Lapageria rosea is an evergreen plant with oval leathery leaves that remain handsome throughout the year. Some thinning out in springtime may be helpful.

When the plant is grown in the wild in Chile, Lapageria rosea would be pollinated by the long-billed hummingbird. The pendent blooms can extend to around 2 to 4 inches or 7 – 9cm in length. Gardeners will need to help with pollination of their own Chilean Bell Flower at home.

Many online and mail order gardening companies will have Chilean Bell Flower climbers for sale. Gardeners wishing to buy a climbing plant for acid soil and a high wall can buying Lapageria rosea, for its pink or red waxy blooms, or alternatively buy Lapageria rosea var. albiflora which has the same plant characteristics and white bell-shaped pendant blooms in autumn.
