In the 1940s, a Wisconsin nursery owner named John G. Dramm saw a need to irrigate his cut flower crop for his florist shop without blasting the delicate blossoms. He developed the Water Breaker nozzle, and started the Dramm Company out of his home.
Tragedy struck this family business not once, but twice, as both the founder John G., and his namesake John P. passed away in their mid-forties. The younger brother, Kurt Dramm, purchased what is today the Dramm Corporation in 1967. Today Dramm continues to improve upon its traditional garden implements, and the company is expanding into new product areas as well.

Proper irrigation techniques are more closely related to pest and disease control than many organic gardeners realize. Getting foliage wet can encourage mildew and other fungal diseases. On the other hand, plants infested with small insect pests like aphids or mites benefit from a strong blast of water. Finally, organic lawns produce the deepest roots when they are irrigated deeply but infrequently.
Dramm’s Touch ‘N Flow Pro Rain Wand allows the gardener to dispense 11 gallons per minute to the root zone of plants, versus the six gallons per minute that is the industry standard. However, if gardeners use this wand with an inferior hose, the threads may not adhere securely enough to the hose to prevent leaking.
Gardeners will appreciate the nine pattern spray head of the Revolver Spray Gun, which allows one to disperse a fine mist over seedlings, or dislodge pests from foliage with a powerful jet. A drawback to using the nozzle is the hand fatigue gardeners will experience from the need to press the trigger continuously to dispense water. This makes the spray gun most useful for quick watering chores.
Gardeners with large organic lawns may choose one of six color choices of the ColorStorm Oscillating Sprinkler, whose improved drive system helps the product live up to its lifetime guarantee. The settings allow the gardener to cover 3036 square feet of lawn space, while the nine spray patterns of the ColorStorm turret sprinkler dispense water to odd-shaped areas like narrow side yards. Gardeners in areas with water restrictions may choose to forgo these sprinklers, as up to 25% of the water may be lost to evaporation.
Recognizing the negative impact chemical fertilizers have on the environment, Dramm is now offering a line of ‚”Drammatic” organic fertilizers based on fish scraps from fish processing facilities. The OMRI listed products are processed at low temperatures so as to keep the integrity of the beneficial hormones, enzymes, and vitamins intact. Gardeners sensitive to fish aromas must be aware that as with any fish-based fertilizer, the Drammatic fertilizers have a strong fish odor.
A pair of quality gardening shears does more for the organic gardener than tidy up the garden. Garden pruners are an essential tool in controlling disease in the organic garden. Gardeners can prune away the beginnings of diseases such as powdery mildew and black spot. Proper pruning also increases air circulation, which carries away fungal spores that might otherwise settle on leaves and neighboring soil.
The Dramm stainless steel compact shear comes in six vivid colors, and its small size means a gardener is more likely to have it on hand in the garden when he notices a plant that needs attention. The small size of these shears make them most appropriate for branches the diameter of a pencil or smaller.
