Almost any area, including an open porch, balcony, or patio can be turned into a country herb garden. If the only land or yard area available is too rocky, or the dirt too poor, then consider making the garden a container herb garden, using small raised beds or large pots. If the area is sloped and hard to walk on, think about doing some terracing to make the plant beds. This will be more work, but terraced gardens are beautiful and fairly easy to maintain.
Also remember to take into account the sun and shade needs of each herb that is to be planted in the garden. If possible, select an area that will sustain herb plants that need sun or shade to add variety to the area.
One must begin with a plan in mind. For ideas, browse through favorite gardening magazines and books that specialize in herbs and country flower gardens. Keep a notebook and a scrapbook of favorite garden pictures and arrangements. Remember that a country herb garden is a casual garden, a garden designed to one’s own tastes. There are no cut-and-dried rules to designing a personal garden, so feel free to be creative with ideas.
Having a diagram of the herb garden will help speed the process. Begin with several sheets of graph paper, a pencil with a good eraser. Open the idea notebook and scrapbook and begin the garden plan.
Think of each square on the sheet of graph paper as one square foot. Begin by drawing a large square or rectangle, approximately the square footage that is available to plant the desired herb garden. This does not mean that the garden must be laid out in a square or rectangle, but by starting with this shape, it will give one a good idea for a preliminary plan.
If the area allotted for the herb garden allows, be sure to add a few winding pathways through the garden. For a country water feature, use an old wash tub or bathtub. If the bathtub pond is large enough, put a few goldfish in the pond to eat the mosquito larvae and help keep the little pond clean. Put up a birdhouse and even wind chimes to add to the garden atmosphere. Add a chair or small bench to the herb garden for a calm and relaxing area to enjoy the garden.
If space for the herb garden is limited, a small patio, balcony, or open porch can be turned into a refreshing country herb garden with just a few pots for planting. Adding a chair to the area for relaxing, along with a few interspersed pots of colorful flowers will help add a country ambience to the small area. To make the spot even more appealing, adding a small water attraction will lend a country atmosphere. A very large plant pot, at least two feet deep, and with no holes in the bottom, can support a small water lily or other type of water garden plant
