Are you the sort of person who likes to be different, someone who mixes stripes with plaids, someone who uses an old cowboy boot as a flower pot, someone who finds that life is oftentimes best if viewed from nooks and crannies, rather just from a mainstream point of view? If so, then you do not want to have a basic, ordinary garden pond!
Why install a garden pond that is just like the one your neighbor has? Why not create one that is totally and entirely unique, one that suits your personality? Here are some ideas to consider before you create your own water feature:
• Unnatural Рas backyard ponds are becoming more and more natural-looking and blending more and more in with their surroundings, why not make yours totally unnatural? Why not make it completely stand out as a fantabulous highlight of your garden? Stray from earthy tones and rocks and get creative.
• Pond liner Рline the bottom of your pond with brightly colored sea glass or recycled glass. If you are making your basin out of cement, why not create a mosaic? Use broken pits of pottery and tiles Рcreate wild and abstract designs, or you could even create a design (why not turn those tiles into a mosaic pond monster?)
• Mirrors, mirrors, in your pond Рmirrors, along the bottom or sides of your pond, can create very interesting effects with the sun and the water. Of course, to keep them looking shiny and beautiful, you will likely have to involve yourself in some regular pond cleaning!
‚Ä¢ Instead of fish… the more unnatural your pond is, the less likely you are going to want to have fish (and the less likely your fish will want to live there!) So, why not have something else, something inanimate to inhabit the waters? You could create a visual joke – plant a bicycle at the bottom of the pond and maybe even add a fish statue to sit atop it (a woman needs a man like a fish needs a bicycle…) Deck the pond floor with dishes and teapots, as though someone is about to have an underwater tea party. Or you could simply submerge objects like statues and gazing globes – some could stick out partly above the water, some could be completely submerged.
The abovementioned ideas are merely started points to get your mind rolling. For further ideas, simply look around your own home, a thrift store, or even a landfill. There are many different (and slightly unnatural) objects out there that might be perfect for your own, unique pond. Make your pond more than a basic ecosystem, make it into a piece of modern garden decor.
Note: Realize that even if you do not have fish, you are going to have to take very good care of your water to keep it clean and sparkly – you may even wish to treat your pond more like a swimming pool…
