Creating a pond? Think circulation, circulation and circulation. Pond pumps in the small or large pond allow water to circulate throughout the pond environment. They move water into pond filters as well, allowing them to clean the water. Some pumps are particularly suitable for the small pond.

A small pond is considered to be everything up to about 1000 gallons of water. This includes very small ponds like fountains and ponds in a barrel and moves up to ponds that are small, in-ground affairs stocked with koi and other fish. A tiny pond may only contain 100 gallons of water.
Even in a small pond, water circulation is important. Without regular circulation of water, animals like mosquitoes will breed. These animals just love standing water. Moving water around the pond also adds oxygen to the pond water, which is very important for animals like koi.
There are two main options when you buy a pond pump: submersible and external pumps. External pond pumps stay outside the pond. Submersible varieties are installed in the water. Submersible pumps are a good choice for the small pond. They make very little noise. Choose a mag-driven pump that does not require coolant and if the pump breaks, there will be no problems with the release of toxic materials into the pond.
Pond pumps are sized according to the gallons of water moved per hour. If you have a small pond or a large one, the ratio is the same. Choose a pond pump with the ability to circulate the pond water every two hours. The gallons per hour rating should be half your pond size. If you have a 500 gallon pond, you need a pump that will move at least 250 gallons per hour. Ponds with fish require a lot more maintenance and oxygen, so choose a pond pump that moves the water once every hour. A 500 gallon pond would then require a pump that moves 500 gallons per hour. You can find the rating for gallons per hour noted as GPH on most pumps.
By choosing a submersible pond pump that meets the oxygen needs of your pond and the animals in it, you make an important step towards the long term health of your pond. Pond life needs oxygen, and to provide oxygen, you need great water circulation.
