Birdhouses as Garden Art

If you are considering a birdhouse as garden art, you can select from a variety of decorative bird houses made from many different materials such as plastic, glass, or wood. Decorative bird houses also come in a plethora of sizes, colors, and styles. If you are not concerned about attracting occupants to a bird house, you can select a bird house simply for the aesthetics and not worry about placing it in a habitat or selecting a style suitable to any particular bird species.

Garden Art Options for Birdhouses

To decorate your yard or garden with birdhouses, consider these possibilities:

  • Add interest to a blank wall or fence by hanging a series of simple birdhouses painted different, complementary colors. Alternatively, you could hang a series of birdhouses that are the same color, but have different shapes, designs, and sizes.
  • Create a central focal point in your garden by mounting a large, ornate birdhouse on a post. Another option is to mount similar but slightly different birdhouses on posts in a group of three. For added visual interest, set the posts at varying heights.
  • Insert new life into a dead or dying tree by mounting several birdhouses on its trunk and branches. You could even create a birdhouse village by mounting birdhouses designed as different city buildings, for example, post office, store, church, police station, and so on.
  • Decorate a tree stump by mounting a birdhouse on top of it. This works best if the stump is a few feet about the ground rather than cut near the roots of the tree.
  • Spruce up a plain fence by mounting a different birdhouse on each fence post.
  • Cover a hole or damaged area of a wall or fence with a mounted birdhouse.
  • Mount a birdhouse as an address sign, that is, place a birdhouse where passersby can see it and attach a sign to it with your own address on it.
  • Build unique birdhouses from items you would otherwise be throwing away, such as empty containers, milk cartons, old car parts, and so on. Mount these unusual birdhouses around your yard and garden where visitors can see and admire them.

Decorating a yard or garden with birdhouses can add visual interest to a yard or garden. However, if you want a functional bird house that will attract and provide a safe home for birds, be sure to consider the needs and preferences of the specific types of birds you want to attract, as well as finding a style suitable for the decor.
