Best Plants and Flowers for East Facing Gardens and Patios

Enjoy a cup of coffee in the morning while relaxing on your east-facing garden or patio and soak up the sun. East-facing areas receive as little as two hours of sun in the morning, or as much as six hours a day. They remain in shade during the afternoon and evening. In terms of picking plants, east-facing patios and gardens are considered to be partial-shade gardens.

In addition to sun requirements, considerations for planting choices in the east-facing garden include the type of soil, amount of water available and the USDA Cold Hardiness Zone.

Table of Contents

Coleus

Coleus brings strong color to the morning garden without flowers. Mix and match this plant with leaves that range in neon colors of lime green, scarlet or yellow. If you prefer softer hues, choose coleus whose leaves are solid or variegated shades of cream, green, rust and copper. This plant is known for its prolific leaves and growth. It will flourish as an annual in all zones and as a perennial in warm climates. It thrives in partial to full shade and needs moderate water in well-drained soil.

Daylily

The perennial daylily grows well in the east-facing garden. It’s known for its dependability, ease of growth, adaptability to the site and beauty. The large blooms come in all range of colors including the traditional red, yellow and orange, as well as newer hues that include lavender, melon and wine. This plant grows well in about every USDA zone except where there are mild winters. The daylily flourishes in rich soil with moderate water.

Geraniums

Geraniums are known for their continuous bloom throughout spring and summer when grown as an annual, and throughout the year when grown as a perennial in warm climates. They bask in the morning light and bloom in colors that include pink, red, white, and lavender, as well as variegated colors. You can choose geraniums that mound and those that are good for ground cover.

Impatiens

In colder climates Impatiens will fill the east-facing garden with continuous summer blooms. In milder climates the plant will grow as a perennial and flourish year-round. You can choose from hundreds of species of impatiens but Impatiens wallerana is known for its colorful blooms in a range of hues, except yellow and true blue. This plant will thrive in pots as well as in the ground; it likes rich soil with moderate water.

Roses

If you’d like roses in your morning garden, choose those that only require about six hours of morning sun. Some choices include ‚”American Pillar,” a pink rose; ‚”Lions International,” a yellow rose, and ‚”Warm Wishes,” a highly fragrant, apricot-colored, award-winning rose. Roses are not fussy about soil type and are fairly drought-tolerant once established.
