Best Kids Gardening Ideas and Activities for Kids Gardens

There is nothing as wonderful as the sun basked faces of children as they tend that special spot of the garden that solely belongs to them. Children can learn how and what it takes for plants, flowers and vegetables to grow and that plants begin as a seed or a bulb. Even if they walk down to the local nursery they will have the adventure of being exposed to so many different types of plants. The reward is allowing them to choose their own. Best of all they get to get their hands dirty and work in the soil and learn what makes a good compost. They get to bring into the house the vegetables and flowers they have grown with a sense of pride and accomplishment. A garden heals the soul and uplifts the spirit. It is a peaceful place to work and fun to play in. I hope all children get a chance to play and plant, to live and learn in a child’s garden.

Top Secret Sunflower Hideaway

Dig a square in the garden soil and plant the sunflower seeds. Make sure you leave an area for the door. Cover sunflower seeds and water.

Kids Pole Bean Tepee

Using a trowel, mark a circle in the soil that is 4ft in diameter. Construct a tripod out of 6-10ft bamboo poles. Distance them evenly from one another but leave extra distance between two poles for an entrance. Dig the bamboo poles into the ground about 2ft deep. Tie the poles together at the top with cord or with a plastic zip tie. Cut the excess cord or zip tie. Plant a half a dozen pole beans at each pole. They come in a variety of colors like Kentucky Blue, green, yellow, purple and even mottled. When they reach about 3 inches weed out and leave only the four strongest ones at each pole. Water every week and train them to climb up the poles.

Personalized Jack-o-Lantern Garden

While the pumpkins are still green on the vine and have not reached full size use a paring knife to carve 1/8 inches deep lines but don’t cut out any pieces. What the child wants to carve is entirely up to him, whether it is a face, his name or a design. A few days later a callus will form over the lines and the design will rise up. Then it will turner a lighter orange than the rest of the pumpkin.

A child’s garden should be mysterious and exciting with Sunflower Hideaways and Pole Bean Tepees. It should have ghoulish carved pumpkins still growing on the vines. A child’s garden is like no other.
