12 Best Black & Decker Weed Eaters & Trimmers

If you’re like most people, you probably don’t buy a new weed eater very often. Typically, we hold onto our trimmers for as many years as it takes until they just don’t work anymore.

Often times we push and pull and tug and kick until we get them to finally start. Some of us go through this process for years before throwing in the towel and shopping for a new trimmer.

Well, if you have finally reached the point where you’ve had enough and are ready to take the plunge into the world of a new weed eater, this guide is for you. If it’s been a while since you were in this market, there are a few things you should know before you buy.  Today’s string trimmers have a lot of features and options, and chances are things have changed since you bought your last one.

In this post, we will take a closer look at Black& Decker, a company that has more than 100-year history and is one of the better-known producers of many different power tools, including weed-eaters, trimmers, and other lawn care devices.

Here is our overview of their top products:

1. Black & Decker GH900

If you’re searching for a string trimmer that’s lightweight, easy to use and powerful enough to get just about any trimming job done, look no further than the Black & Decker GH900. This 14” electric trimmer and edger is easy to use and comes at a price that just about anyone can afford.

The Black & Decker GH900 is the perfect tool for trimming those hard-to-reach areas your mower can’t get to. It comes loaded with great features that will make trimming and edging a piece of cake.

Because this is a corded electric model, you can continue working until the job is done. There are no batteries to change, and there’s no gas and oil to mix.

With the Automatic Feed Spool AFS, bumping is completely eliminated for line-feeding that’s hassle-free.

Thanks to the PowerDrive transmission, the trimmer won’t get bogged down by heavy weeds and grass. With an ergonomic design and lightweight of just 7 pounds, fatigue is never really an issue. The handle’s height can be adjusted and pivoted to your desired position for the utmost in comfort and complete control.

If you’re looking for a trimmer that’s a high performing, the GH900 is a great choice. With a 65. Amp motor with a high torque belt, this trimmer can tackle even the toughest of weeds and grass.

While this model’s performance is exceptional, one of its most notable features is its 2-in-1 conversion capabilities. In just a few simple steps, you can convert this trimmer into an edger. When using the Smart Edging Mode, you gain more accuracy and control for cleaner and straighter edging.

With 2-in-1 capabilities, the Black & Decker GH900 is a smart investment for any homeowner looking to keep a tidy, clean yard.

Some people may have problems with the AFS system as they don’t realize that this trimmer doesn’t auto-feed to the size of the guard’s cutter. The auto-feed is just a little bit shorter, so that may confuse some users into thinking that the AFS is not working properly.

Overall, the Black & Decker GH900 is an excellent string trimmer for both large and small yards alike. It’s affordable, lightweight, easy to use and powerful enough to cut through tough weeds and overgrowth.

While the AFS may take some getting used to, you’ll appreciate not having to bump the feed constantly. The GH900 is a trimmer that we highly recommend to any homeowner who wants a corded electric model.

2. Black & Decker GH600

Black and Decker Grass Hog GH600 14 Inch Amp Electric String Trimmer and Edger is a very reliable tool. It is automated by an electric motor of 4.8 Ampere which is used to spin the line. The spinning rpm is 9,500 giving a cutting experience of 14-inch.

The AFS or Automated Feed Spool system ensures and maneuvers in a way that when the line breaks you don’t require bumping off the trimmer on the ground.

A quick and conveniently adjustable head that rotates easily up to 180 degrees and once started by pressing the button, and while rotating the handle you need to do is wait till the head gets locked in its place.

One Auxiliary handle is there for additional control and convenience and it also has an additional feature for the precision of trimming and cutting.

Centrifugal force advances the lines and ensures that the whole cutting experience becomes more predictable and reliable. Weighing about 5.2 lbs, this product comes also with a complete warranty for two years.

Black and Decker Grass Hog GH600 virtually requires no assembly whatsoever. Simply following the guide, you will have your trimmer ready in 5 minutes.

It is really easy to use considering it is an entry-level trimmer. The rotating head is easily replaceable and rotates 180degrees to give you the best cutting edge technology.

In total, the Black and Decker Grass Hog GH600 is a fine gadget if you want to get over with the job of lawn trimming easily, smoothly, quickly and most importantly in an expensive way.

3. Black & Decker GH710

Black and Decker Grass Hog GH710 14-Inch 6.0-Amp Dual-Line Trimmer is a very powerful machine and helps you to complete your job faster. It is a lightweight (5.4 lbs) machine and it does not need any expertise to handle.

The extra powerful torque of 6.0 amp can adjust itself to any cutting condition.

The groom n’edge has flip-up head, which can rotate 180 degrees and enables the mode to be converted from cutting to trimming easily in a few seconds.

The additional handle and design combined with the convenient height of the Grass Hog helps the user to gain more grip and comfort while using it.

The AFS dual line of spool helps the trimmer to proceed the line easily without the need for the user to stop or bump the trimmer and the corded power ensures that there is no impediment caused to your lawn trimming by a dead battery. Also, the patented cord-lock system ensures that there is no accidental unplugging.

The 5.4 pounds Black and Decker Grass Hog GH710 makes you realize why many people prefer corded grass trimmer over a cordless one. There is practically no hassle of batteries going dead and the user having to run for a replacement quickly to continue the trimming.

Moreover, the cutting head rotates easily which helps to switch easily from the cutting mode to the trimming mode.

While this model is a bit smaller than expected, it does save quite a lot of storage space. The 14” diameter is not bad for a small trimmer and the best part is you do not have to worry about maintaining the proper length of the strings to keep it working in good condition: the B & D auto-feed system along with the dual trimming lines does the job well.

4. Black & Decker GH1100

This model features a 7.2 amp motor to power dual lines that cut a nice swath of 14 inches as you use it. This is a very lightweight model and a toddler could carry it around with ease (though not recommended). This is a more powerful unit then some older Black and Decker weed eaters making it much more versatile. You can use it for edging, trimming and even shaping certain shrubbery.

This is a standalone unit and doesn’t come with any fancy features like a super-powered battery, charging station or other things and this is reflected at the low price point.

This model was intended to replace the older GH1100 but it is not really clear how it is different. The battery may use better power-saving technology or improvements could have been made to the engine, I am not really sure.

User reviews on this model are very mixed and most of the negative reviews are from people who haven’t used a dual-line model of Black and Decker weed eater before or are using this for a gigantic area.

This is a low-priced model meant to be used on average, nicely maintained small residential lots. If you’re using it to trim a ditch full of thick and gnarly vegetation, you might have some frustration. Try a 3rd party plastic blade to save a few bucks on replacement spools if you’re burning through them.

5. Black & Decker ST1000

There is very little assembly required with this product. Simply tighten two screws and you are ready to go. It is worth mentioning that the unit does not come with an extension cord, so if you don’t have one already, you will need to buy one.

The Black And Decker ST1000 comes equipped with a cord lock system. This is handy so you don’t have to worry about the cord coming undone while trimming. However, a large, heavy-duty extension cord will not fit.

Before using this model, the Worx GT weed eater was the lightest trimmer I had ever used, but this one was even lighter. It weighs just 3.2 pounds! It is very short, though. So if you stand above 5′ 7″ or so, this might cause some discomfort for you.

But, the good thing is, is that you shouldn’t have to use this weed eater for long periods of time. This trimmer is meant for very light trimming on small yards. If that’s what you need it for, then it’s perfect for you. But if you need it for anything more, I suggest a heavier duty model.

Like other electric trimmers, there is little maintenance required with this unit. And, it’s easy to store away and takes up little space. There’s no gas to keep, no batteries to charge. It’s environmentally friendly, too.

I’m used to longer, heavier, gas-powered weed eaters, so there was some adjustment for me. But, if you want a cheap, light trimmer for some light trimming and edging, this is an excellent choice.

6. Black & Decker ST7700

Black & Decker is not a brand that any person would think of as cheap, but the Black & Decker ST7700 is one of the most affordable trimmers and edgers on the market.

Backed by the Black & Decker name, this trimmer boasts a 4.4 amp motor and over 10 thousand RPMs to cut through any weeds or plants with ease.

This feature-rich trimmer boasts immense power, but what about its other features? Let’s take a look at a few of the standout features every person must know about.

The auxiliary handle reduces a person’s wrist fatigue so that they can trim for a prolonged time without fatigue or wrist pain.

Cutting is done with a 13-inch path so that users can cut more in less amount of time and the rotating head makes cutting even easier.

This model weighs a mere 4.5 pounds which is exceptional for any trimmer and the Automatic Feed Spool will automatically feed in the new line as it is needed.

There is also an advanced cord retention system that prevents disconnection while trimming.

Not only is it affordable, but it features 10,000 RPMs which allows it to obliterate virtually any size weed that it comes across. With the handle being extremely comfortable, users can trim their entire yard without feeling fatigued. The low weight is merely another added bonus that cannot go overlooked.

The automatic line feeder also works very well, which lowers the amount of time a person would normally waste bumping to feed in the new line.

While there are not many faults seen, there are some small nuances that cannot be overlooked. The first is that you will need to have plenty of extension cord line to be able to trim a larger yard. Since this is an electric model, users should expect the cord to be rather short.

The other issue is that users seem to go through a lot of line rather quickly. While replacement is always a must, there is no average yard size to judge against. This may be more of an issue of a person’s yard size than the model itself. Some users also love the automatic feeder and others say that it isn’t perfect. However, this is quite common with even high-end models.

Black & Decker seems to always get it right by providing an exceptional product at an even better price. With a strong motor and a 180-degree rotating head, the ST7700 is able to provide precision cutting at all times. Whether trimming or edging, this is a great model for small to medium-size yards. Just remember to bring an extension cord along.

7. Black & Decker NST2118B

Tired of smelly gas-powered trimmers? Hate dragging a cord around for your electric trimmer? If you have a small to a medium-sized yard, a battery-powered trimmer could be the answer. Black & Decker has a reputation for making practical, reliable tools and their 18 Volt Ni-cad Cordless String Trimmer/Edger is no exception.

This trimmer/edger has several features that make it stand out. For starters, the aluminum telescoping shaft is completely adjustable. Because you can set it at a height that works for you, it’s really comfortable to use.

The engine starts up as soon as you push the trigger, so you won’t break a sweat just getting it to work. The PowerDrive Transmission ensures that more power is delivered from the motor to the cutting string. This means you’ll be able to do more work in less time.

Adjusting the string trimmer spool on these machines can be a real hassle. But once again, Black & Decker has come up with a solution. Their Automatic Feed Spool technology virtually eliminates bumping so you can carry on working without any interruptions. Another innovation, the Groom N’ Edge flip-guide, lets you switch between trimming and edging in seconds.

Unfortunately, the batteries for this trimmer are sold separately. And we’d recommend that you buy two batteries and keep both charged at all times. The last you need is to run out of power when you still have half the yard to do.

It’s a durable, lightweight tool that makes trimming your own edges a breeze. And with no smell, no noise, and no cords it makes perfect sense for homeowners with a small yard that just needs regular maintenance. The fact that it doesn’t add to your carbon footprint makes it even more worthy of a five-star rating.

8. Black & Decker NST2018

For normal grass that is trimmed on a regular basis, the weed eater will cut it just fine. However, it will not cut taller, tough grass and weeds. Nor should you expect it to. If you need a trimmer for that, I recommend purchasing a gas-powered unit. This trimmer is intended for someone with a small to a medium-sized lawn that needs light trimming and edging.

The NST2018 comes with two batteries and a charger. On the model I used, the batteries lasted about 15 minutes each. For some, this will be long enough. Others, this will not be adequate, still, you can purchase additional batteries. It is also worth noting that the batteries take about 8 hours to charge.

It is made for small to medium-sized lawns that need light trimming and edging. If you have a large yard or property with overgrown weeds, this is not the trimmer for you. If you already own other B & D tools, this is a good choice since the extra batteries can come in handy.

9. Black & Decker NST1024

The Black and Decker NST1024 is the “middle of the road” electric weed eater in the B&D lineup. This model sacrifices some of the power of larger models in favor of a lightweight, easy to use home unit that anyone in the family can use with ease. I like to consider this one the “my first electric weed eater” because it’s got such a perfect size/power ratio.

The Black & Decker NST1024 comes with a 24 Volt rechargeable battery that seems to last longer than it should. If you’ve used the 18 Volt models in the past, this feels like a massive improvement. Why? I’m not sure, it just seems to handle more problem lawn areas before needing a recharge. If you think of the 18 Volt as a small home unit, this one is more of a mid-sized lot unit. The official site says it should be able to tackle about one-third of an acre and it definitely pulls this off.

This model uses the same patented B&D switches and transmission as larger models so you can get the most out of every charge and the super high-speed motor just makes trimming and edging a breeze.

This is the perfect electric weed eater for a new homeowner with a small to a medium-sized lawn that requires moderate attention. If you’re a gardener or landscaper, this is a nice unit to have around for when the seasons decide you need a little extra work to do and that high grass creeps into your property line, around your walkways or porches or anywhere you don’t want it to be. The battery is a significant upgrade from a 12 or 18 Volt model and it charges quickly.

This is a light and responsive weed eater that really shines in all areas of use. Just try to keep the battery nice and dry and out of direct sunlight when storing it.

9. Black & Decker LST136

When it comes to electric weed eaters, Black and Decker have always offered some of the most durable and dependable products out there.

In the 90s, battery-only models weren’t particularly efficient and would end up “bending” grass and weeds pretty quickly. Today’s batteries are much more powerful and last a lot longer. The Black and Decker LST136 features a 36V Lithium-Ion battery that can last up to 3 hours or more of sporadic use after a single 1-hour charge.

The Black and Decker LST136 weed eater uses the popular PowerCommand system that lets you switch cutting styles on the fly. That rough patch across the yard looks a little on the thick side? Turn the dial to Max Power and cut that baby down to size.

This is a very light electric weed eater making it perfect for men or women who like to get out there and take charge of their lawn and property borders where things can get out of hand pretty quickly when unwanted foliage grabs hold.

This model is perfect for home and business use. It doesn’t matter if you’re a weekend lawn warrior or someone running a landscaping business, this is a great Black and Decker electric weed eater. It doesn’t make much noise, remains powered for mid-large sized areas and changing the line is simple when needed. This is a solid product and all reviews around the Internet rave about it.

This model is compatible with third-party line replacements and plastic cutting devices but it could void your warranty if you use them improperly. Make sure you know what you’re doing if you ever replace the standard line with a different product or brand.

10. Black & Decker LST420

At its current price point, the LST420 is a great value, and the trimmer’s combined run time of around 45 minutes is more than enough for most people with average yards. As far as cordless trimmers go, this one strikes a good balance between price and power.

If you are looking to upgrade from the 18v, this trimmer is a nice step up. It may also be a good option for those looking to convert from a gas-powered to an electric trimmer at a price that won’t break the budget.

Adjustable length and trimmer/edger mode. Adjustable runtime mode gives extra power when you need it, but saves conserves battery life when you don’t. Built with Power Drive transmission, transferring more power to get the job done. The LST420 includes two 2.0 amp lithium batteries vs the nearly identical LST400, which includes one 4.0 amp battery.

Black & Decker LST400 vs. LST420

These models are the latest installments of the 20-volt lithium-ion string trimmers from Black and Decker. Released in 2013, these trimmers are nearly identical, with the primary difference being the battery configuration.

With the lst400, you get a single 4 amp lithium-ion battery, capable of up to one hour of run time. The lst420, on the other hand, ships with two 2 amp batteries, which combined give you the same one hour of run time. So, it is really a matter of personal preference as to which model works best.

Both the lst400 and lst420 feature a 12-inch cutting area, 20-volt power system, easy start, and easy conversion to edger. They also include an automatic line feeder and lightweight and easy to handle for most users.

Updates to this year’s models include Extended Runtime Technology – which is a dual power selection switch allowing for lower power setting to extend run time – and a reworked transmission.

11. Black & Decker LST300

Great things can come in small packages and so does this unit! So don’t let this little lightweight trimmer fool you; it will get your yard work done quickly and easily. The 20-v battery can handle light to moderate yard work, and the easy adjustment system allows for quick adjustment of the machine.

Black and Decker LST300 has good battery life and can handle light to moderate work in your yard or garden. This model does not come automatically with the warranty, so for peace of mind, you might want to get that separately.

Overall this is a good unit if you have a small to an average-sized yard, and you don’t want to lug around heavy equipment to get the job done.

The 20-v battery offers 33% more power than your average LBXR20 pack, so don’t be surprised if this model just keeps on going and going.

Since it’s cordless, you can carry it around with less hassle. It offers a strong, smooth, and powerful performance that’s amazing in such a small and compact package.

Black & Decker LST300 vs. LST220

Like the newer lst400 series, the lst300 and lst220 are the same trimmers with different battery configurations. In this case, the LST220 comes with two batteries, and the LST300 comes with one. Once again, you can expect the same amount of total run time from each configuration.

These models are essentially the older versions of the lst400 series, featuring 20-volt power systems and a 12-inch cutting area. Some of the features missing from the older models are the dual power selection switch and the improved transmission.

12. Black & Decker LCC220 (Trimmer & Sweeper Combo Kit)

If you are looking for a set you should consider getting the Black & Decker LCC220 Cordless Trimmer and Sweeper Combo Kit, which includes an edger, trimmer,  LSW20 sweeper as well as two lithium-ion batteries.

It is powerful enough to handle light to moderate yard work and allows for easy sweeping of debris from hard surfaces. The telescoping handle can switch from trimmer to edger in one twist of the shaft, and the battery life retains more power compared to NiCad batteries.

Black and Decker LCC220 has comes with two batteries, both of which are made from lithium-ion. It has low emissions and smell. The unit is cordless and starts up easily.

But aware that the unit weighs in at 13 lbs., which can become quite cumbersome if used for long periods of time. Also, the batteries drain quickly if used for heavy yard work, or if running at maximum power for the whole duration of use. Edging seems to drain the batteries more quickly than trimming.

Overall we’d say this unit is for you as long as you aren’t doing intense yard work that doesn’t require a lot of edging.
