Summer lawns need to be mowed more often than winter lawns, because grass grows much faster in warm weather. The lawn mower should be set on high and the blades should be sharp to ensure a clean cut more than an inch long. Grass blades cut less than an inch long can be damaged from the sun.
Healthy lawns start in the fall after summer lawns have stopped growing and before the ground has froze. This is the time to fertilize because it will protect the roots of the grass when the lawn is dormant during the cold months of winter. When preparing the grass for winter, make sure the highest number on the fertilizer is phosphorus, but it should also contain potassium and nitrogen, which are the standard grass fertilizers. Phosphorus promotes root growth.
The most effective way to prevent weeds from growing is to cut the lawn on a high setting and keep the grass thick by deep watering. Persistent weeds should be pulled, as poisons can damage or kill the grass around the weed.
