Annual Flower List

Planting annual flowers in the garden offers both color and the ability to change. Annual flowers grow for only a year and if the owner decides to change the look of the garden the next year there will be no transplanting. There are many annual flowers to choice among and what follows below is only a small list of flowers that can be planted.

Flossflower (Ageratum houstonianum)

Sow flossflower seeds directly into the garden in May. Seeds started inside can be planted in April. When transplanting them to the garden, space plants six to nine inches apart. Flossflowers make nice garden edges and borders. They will grow six to eighteen inches tall and produce small clusters of flowers that can be lavender, blue, pink or white.

Cornflower (Centaurea cyanus)

Cornflower seeds can be planted as early as April both indoors and outdoors. This flower will grow 20 to 30 inches tall and have daisy like flowers in yellow or brownish red. Cornflowers make wonderful flowers for arrangements. Sow new seeds monthly for season long blooming.

Baby’s Breath (Gypsophila elegans)

The quick-blooming Baby’s Breath con be sown into the garden in May and then sown again throughout the warm season. Baby’s Breath grow twelve to eighteen inches high and produce small white flowers. Commonly used as fillers in flower arrangements, they grow well in greenhouses and as house plants.

Creeping Zinnia (Sanvitalia procumbent)

Seeds should be sown in may. Creeping Zinnias will grow to eight inches tall with yellow blooms. These flowers make very nice bedding and ground covering plants. Creeping Zinnias also have long lasting blooms.

Poppy (Eschs cholzia)

Poppy flowers can be planted outdoors in May and indoors as early as April. Their flowers come in yellow and red and the plant will grow eight to ten inches high. Poppies can grow in very dry conditions and because their blooms are short lived a second or third sowing can be done to prolong garden color.

Morning Glory (Ipomoea spp.)

The seeds should be soaked in water the night before planting and can be sown as early as May. Morning Glories are a veining plant that can grow over 72 inches tall and create a dense screen. Their flowers come in white, pink, lavender and blue.

Amethyst (Browallia speciasa)

Amethyst seeds can be planted in may as bedding plants for shaded sections of the flower bed. They grow eight to twelve inches tall and produces free flowering blue or white blooms.

Forget-Me-Nots (Myosotis sylvantiaa)

Flower seeds can be planted in early Spring after the threat of frost is gone. Forget-Me-Nots will grow six to twelve inches tall and blooms can be yellow, punk, blue or white. If the plant makes it through winter it will fill in around Spring plants.

Spider flower (Cleome hasslera)

Seeds can be sown in may outdoors and started inside in April, These tall flowers grow 36 to 48 inches tall and blooms will be pink, purple or white. Spiderflowers make attractive tall boarders and backgrounds. This plant will self sow, so plants may pop up year after year.
