A Single Color Garden Theme with White Flowering Plants

Creating a single color theme garden can be an exciting and unique experience. At times it can even be demanding but the pure pleasure received from an individually created theme garden is rarely surpassed and for supreme garden purity white is the inevitable choice.

There is an abundance of white flowering plants available, Narcissus for the Spring, Delphinium for the Summer, Bugbane for the Fall and delicate Snowdrops for the Winter. However, to get the overall white color theme off to a good start a more formal approach may be needed. The best way forward is to follow the seasons so start with the awakening of spring.

White Flowers for Spring Bloom

  • ‚”Narcissus Thalia” is without exception the perfect perennial bulb for the white garden. With a cluster of white long lasting blooms on top of 35cm. stems from early spring, planted in any full sun position this perennial is a tried and trusted favorite.
  • ‚”Hyacinth White Pearl” is another favorite spring perennial.
  • ‚”Camellia Cornish Snow” is an evergreen spring flowering shrub. Its white blossoms last for up to six weeks and it is reasonably hardy. It tolerates an acid soil and even some salt spray. Other camellias are ‚”Camellia Silver Anniversary” and ‚”Camellia Angel“.
  • ‚”Primula Denticulata Alba” is an 45cm. high perennial which will tolerate most soils in sun or partial shade. From a distance the flower-heads look like snowballs.

Other Spring favorites might include White Rhododendron and Dahlias.

White Flowers for Summer Coolness

When the hot days of summer seem endless the cool tranquility emanating from an all white theme garden is most appreciated by planting cool favorites such as:

  • Clematis. These plants will grow happily in U.S. zones 5 to 10 and for a white beauty select, ‚”Clematis Miss Bateman“, which has long lasting white blooms from early summer. It grows to about 8ft.in sun or partial shade in sandy soil. Also look for ‚”Clematis Arctic Queen“, which is showered in white double flowers from May to August.
  • ‚”Iberis Amara” or also known as ‚”Rocket Candytuft” is a white flowering annual for early summer. It is a vigorous grower with masses of white blossoms in any full sun position.
  • ‚”Gladiolus White Prosperity” or ‚”Gladiolus Innocence” will add graceful height when positioned at the back of a border. Growing to over 1m. tall these ice cool flowers will enchant throughout the summer.
  • ‚”Fuchsia Annabel“, is a magnificent addition in white themed hanging baskets with oodles of trailing stems covered in fine white flowers.

For dignified garden grandeur it is difficult to beat white Delphiniums. These perennial plants like a full sun position and will need to be staked from the outset.

White Flowers for Fall and Winter

When the summer is waning there is no need to despair for an all white theme garden for fall and winter. Although it may be necessary to look a bit further and deeper for white winter flowering plants than with the endless choice for spring and summer, some good choices are:

  • ‚”Cimicifuga simplex” or more simply termed ‚”Black Bugbane“, is a late blooming white perennial. It does well in shady areas in moist conditions. It can grow up to 1.2m. with white arching flower spikes throughout the fall.
  • ‚”White Heather” is always a good choice for winter color. Heathers are tolerant plants and will be covered in white delicate flowers during the colder months.
  • ‚”Silver Birch” or ‚”Betula pendula” is without doubt one of the most graceful medium height trees for autumn and winter color. Its bark is its triumph. It is a slender deciduous tree and during the winter months the bark is snow white on mature trees. A perfect backdrop as a focal point in an all white themed garden.
  • Common Snowdrops” are about 15cm. high and thrive in moist conditions. They are hardy perennials and they naturalize into lawns and underneath deciduous trees with ease.

When a white theme garden is being premeditated white floribunda bush roses such as ‚”Rosa Margaret Merrill” or the white ground cover rose, ‚”Rosa Snow Ballet”, deserve to be considered. Themed gardens are individual and unique but not exclusively white. Add sunshine to gardens with yellow flowering plants and outstanding color with red flowering plants or for garden warmth use pink flowering plants.
