6 Varieties of Unique Perennial Flower Species

Gardeners around the world agree that the genera of delphiniums and astilbes embody two of the most desirable flowering perennials available in gardening. Within each genus, three species emerge as the most beautiful and attractive when compared against the rest. This article reveals the three most desirable perennial flowers within the delphiniums and astilbes genera.

Delphiniums produce regal stocks of blossoms which often overshadow the beauty of any other flower in any garden. There are numerous varieties of delphiniums to choose from; the following list identifies the three most desirable species of delphiniums to plant in any special place.

Blue Lace Delphiniums

The long stalks from which their baby blue flowers are produced can reach heights up to two feet. Numerous flowers emerge from each blue lace delphinium stalk, turning them into a spire of thickly packed flowers. Each flower on the stalk can produce up to thirty petals.

Pagan Purple Delphiniums

This variety of delphinium produces long stalks of tightly packed and beautifully colored flowers. Each flower is larger than the average blossom observed on the average delphiniums. The flowers have many petals that are available in sparkling dark blue and royal purple combinations.

New Millenium Delphiniums

This variety will grow to reach heights ranging between 4 and 5 feet. The species is long lived and grows well in moderate temperatures, tolerating some heat. Their large flowers are densely packed along strong, tall stems, making them an easy species of delphinium to grow in the garden.

Astilbes are attractive plants that produce blossoms which are large, colorful and fragrant. There are numerous varieties of astilbes, each with unique growing conditions and blossoms. Here are three of the most popular varieties:

Pumila (Astilbe chinensis)

This variety of astilbes is a low growing plant which would make an excellent choice for a flowering groundcover. It will grow to form a carpet of foliage that will be embellished each spring with spikes of light purple and pink blossoms.

White Gloria (Astilbe arendsii)

Arguably the most beautiful of white astilbes, the white Gloria produces densely packed white blossoms. These blossoms are pyramidal in shape and may reach lengths exceeding four inches. Their white blossoms are contrasted amazingly by their dark green foliage.

Pink Lightning (Astilbe simplicifolia)

This variety of astilbes will grow about 18 inches tall and produces beautiful foliage with dark green markings. This astilbe variety gets the name pink lightning because of the large and colorful flower spikes which grow rapidly each year. The blossoms are light pink in color and appear very full and open.
